Varicose veins is a slowly progressive disease caused by weak or damaged vein walls and valves. Superficial veins near the surface of the skin visibly swell, when one-way valves break down or vein walls weaken due to obstruction or prolonged pressure on the veins, allowing blood to flow backward.
